Foedus platform (Facilitating Exchange of Organs Donated in EU Member States)

Published on 23 April 2025

This platform was created as part of a European project conducted between 2013 and 2016. It involved 25 European partners and was coordinated by the Italian National Transplant Center. It is an organ donation platform initiated by the European Union, with the aim of facilitating and harmonizing transplantation systems between member states. The project had three main objectives:

  • to identify a common methodology for the exchange of surplus organs between EU countries
  • Develop an IT portal for organ exchange.
  • Create common strategies for public communication on organ donation in general, and organ exchanges between countries in particular.

The Fœdus platform has been operational since 2015. This initiative responds to a crucial challenge: improving compatibility between donors and recipients on a large scale, by optimizing the exchange of information and the coordination of medical resources through a common platform.

Foedus is the world's first platform to enable such cross-border cooperation in the field of organ donation. This innovative project strengthens solidarity between European countries and increases the chances of survival for patients awaiting transplants. Designed and developed entirely in Europe, it illustrates the European Union's commitment to public health and medical innovation.
