What are the contraindications to bone marrow donation?

Unfortunately, you cannot register as a donor if you are affected by any of the following conditions:
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- respiratory disorders
- nervous system disorders
- cancer
- metabolic disorders (diabetes, liver failure)
- treatment with anticoagulants
- history of phlebitis or pulmonary embolism
- back problems
- neuromuscular disorders
- certain severe allergic reactions
- severe overweight
- situations involving risk of infection
- and, in general, any long-term use of medication.
You regularly ask us whether the reasons listed below are contraindications to registration: the answer is no.
- being tattooed or pierced
- homosexual relations
- have had a blood transfusion
- being on contraception
- use cannabis
To register as a bone marrow donor, you need to be in perfect health. If, one day, you are called upon to donate, it is because you have been identified as THE person compatible with a patient. To give the patient the best possible chance of recovery, additional medical examinations will be carried out before your donation and the start of the patient's preparation for the transplant.
