What is pre-implantation diagnosis (PGD)?

Published on 23 December 2024

Preimplantation diagnosis can be offered to people with a family risk of transmitting a particularly serious genetic disease to their future child. Once the indication has been validated by a multidisciplinary prenatal diagnosis center (CPDPN), the PGD procedure consists in carrying out a genetic diagnosis of the genetic disease that could be transmitted on embryos obtained by in vitro fertilization. An embryo unaffected by the family disease is then re-implanted in the mother's uterus. This pre-implantation diagnosis is currently carried out by 5 authorized centers in France.
