Prenatal screening aims to detect a disease in the embryo or fetus during pregnancy. The most common form of prenatal screening is ultrasound imaging, which is part of every pregnant woman's medical check-up in France. Pregnant women are also offered blood tests, including screening for certain trisomies, the most common genetic diseases. All screening tests are offered to pregnant women, and are carried out if they wish and sign a consent form. If the screening tests (ultrasound, blood test) show an abnormality, then a diagnostic test is offered to confirm the result, and to understand the consequences for the unborn child.
