The Agence de la biomédecine monitors scientific developments in the field of neuroscience in order to keep Parliament, the Government and all stakeholders informed of advances in research and their ethical and regulatory implications. It regularly publishes a newsletter to inform debates and support legislative developments. Since January 2025, the Agency has also been piloting the Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies implemented by the General Directorate for Research and Innovation (DGRI) of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).
The Agency's watch mission
Neuroscience is developing rapidly, thanks to advances in research in France and abroad. In accordance with France's bioethics laws, the Agence de la biomédecine is tasked with keeping Parliament and the government constantly informed of developments in knowledge and techniques in this field. Its role is to shed light on the scientific, regulatory and ethical issues surrounding neuroscience, particularly in relation to its fields of expertise.
Publications
The Agence conducts a scientific watch in collaboration with experts, to keep abreast of developments in knowledge and analyze work being carried out in the neurosciences, both in France and internationally. It publishes newsletters to disseminate the main advances in this field and encourage exchanges between research players. These publications, accessible to all, shed light on scientific perspectives and their ethical and societal implications.
The Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies
The aim of this charter is to promote the responsible development of neurotechnologies for medical and non-medical applications, by reinforcing trust between all stakeholders. It also aims to protect patients and consumers from potentially abusive and malicious uses leading to a loss of cognitive freedom, or a failure to respect the confidentiality of personal brain data collected.
